Caught and Released

“I caught myself whimsically smiling”

How muse-worthy the memories of true philos

A cloud-bank catching and reflecting late-goldens.

“I laughed as a captive redeemed”

Freedom in wise-loving hands and holy unhooking-

A captive bluegill released returns bolting to pond-depths.

“I wept with no fear of being shamed”

Bodaciously rain storm thundered pain upon such spaces-

A rain-washed meadow, wild-flower seeded, now loosed to grow.

“I wrote the pain and heard spirit sigh with relief”

Oh pen, flow forth and back to this rich loamy fullness-

A Moccasin flower bursts in quieted pink-white glory toward the vernal sun.

“We are singing anew, this knowing of me through knowing with you”

Kindred graced freedoms banishing fears in trusted community; held-

“This is what God does; how love is; where life grows!”

On the Opening of Lilac Sniffing Season

Across the town, across the field,

my nose was up; winter’s body must yield.

Pedaling for scent, I ignored the storm

Pursuing Her, driven, in Spring-fever form!

These memories crowding ahead of the rain-

Somewhere out there- Lilacs to gain!

In parts per million my nostrils twitched

Dandelion, Apple, Plum, Forsythia Tulip

Crab tree Ornamentals of delectable stripes!

Oh, No! Get away! Thawing manure! Right ripe!

Away-ward, fast outward in circular style

I pump hard, I strain for, the spring lilac smile!

Serendipitous alley, all dusty, un-kept-

after judgin’ folks round here as inept

at Lilac appreciation; inhalable joy…

eye glance met leaf-form, tis that perfumed alloy!

Yes, Lilac, you Lilac, so pur-ple-ly blessed,

of all forms of nose joy, in spring, you’re the best!

So slyly and stealthy I slipped off a slip,

tucked into my backpack and home in a zip!

Shared goodness grows friendship; here sweet joys abound-

Lilac leaf and flowerets speak community sounds!

Instructed, humbled, and awed do I write

Creator gifts, through You and Lilac—such meekness, such might!

Love Seeps In

There are spaces and cracks in our lives

where love leaks in.

I saw a stone split wide open

in the freezing and thawing places

of a Minnesota winter-spring.

I only saw one

but it was enough to tell me

how persistently powerful

is this moistening!

Soft, gentle, water-life

ripping open rock-

simply by just being there,

In the crevices of life . . .

Penetrating and seeping in,

unobtrusively,

serendipitously,

as the world turns.

And I eat my rhubarb sauce with cream,

now breaking into smiles,

as the tulips are also blossoming red!

Maple Syrup

Warmed and
maple-syruped
glances smite
the waffle-souled
fellow, leaving him
all golden-browned,
buttery, and absolutely
pancake-smitten.
